Bayley-4 Developmental Assessment

What is a Bayley-4 developmental assessment?

The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Fourth Edition, commonly known as Bayley-4, is a standardised assessment used to understand the development of infants and toddlers. It helps identify a child’s strengths and areas that may benefit from support, providing information to guide early intervention or further assessment.

What does Bayley-4 assess?

Bayley-4 covers five areas of early development:

  • Learning and thinking (Cognitive): How your child pays attention, explores objects, remembers information and solves simple problems.
  • Communication (Language): How your child understands language and communicates with others.
  • Movement (Motor): How your child uses their hands and fingers for smaller movements, as well as their whole body for larger movements.
  • Social and emotional development: How your child expresses their needs, interacts with others and regulates their emotions.
  • Everyday skills (Adaptive Behaviour): How your child uses their skills in daily activities, including communication, self-care and play.

Depending on the areas being assessed, information is gathered through structured activities with your child and questionnaires completed by parents or caregivers.
